Buddhism is the dominant religion in Thailand (94% of the population), and orange-robed monks and gold, marble and stone Buddhas are common sights throughout Thailand. The prevalent form of Buddhism practised is the Theravada school, which emphasises the potential of the individual to attain nirvana without the aid of saints or gurus. 4% of the population are Muslim with the final 1% practicing a variety of other religions.
Buddhism is an integral part of a Thai person's thinking and way of life.
Thais take their religion extremely seriously indeed. They are tolerant people who require only that you show courtesy and respect towards their religious beliefs, institutions, and artifacts.
